Research & Development: the “drive” of the company

To be able to respond in a comprehensive manner to the demands of such a vast and dynamic sector, Probiotical has deemed advisable to create our advanced Research Centre for probiotics over 1,200 square meters of clean room laboratories.

Research & Development represents the “drive” of the company. Efficiency, reliability and diligence are the foundations of its efficacy; innovation, technical expertise and ingenious minds complete the picture.
Our team of researchers is steadily committed to both explorative and applied research.
In the first area of research, studies are conducted towards the discovery of probiotics with different functionalities.
In addition to studying traditional functionality associated with regulation of intestinal motility, we are investigating the potential of new strains with specific metabolic properties able to produce:

  • hydrolytic enzymes capable of improving assimilation of nutritional substances in the diet;
  • short-chain fatty acids which reduce faecal pH and provide a trophic effect on enterocytes;
  • bacteriocins which guarantee barrier effect against potential intestinal pathogens;
  • vitamins, such as B2, B12 and folic acid, indispensable also in regulating the concentration of homocysteine, believed to be the cause of many cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases;
  • compounds with antioxidant (antiaging) properties to enhance the quality of life and protect against typical degenerative diseases associated with aging;
  • molecules with hypoglycaemic and cholesterol-reducing activity to diminish the risk of serious cardio-circulatory pathologies;
  • substances with anti-inflammatory action, with a biological activity particularly helpful in cases of IBS, IBD and atopic dermatitis.

Important studies have shown that some probiotic strains are able to induce immune-modulating action with beneficial results on immune defences. Specific probiotic blends have been successfully tested for the prevention of flu.
Applied research involves deals with the planning of effective formulations which guarantee the properties of the probiotic strains for the commercial life of the product. This includes studies on prebiotic fibres to optimise growth of the probiotic strains, biocompatibility of the strain with excipients and other active components of the formulation, product stability and efficacy of the end compound.
