Scientific Rationale

Dry Eye Disease (DED) is a prevalent condition, affecting over 5% of the global population. It is characterized by persistent irritation, a sensation of a foreign body in the eye, blurred vision, and can significantly interfere with work and daily activities [1].

Common treatments for DED involve artificial tears with hyaluronic acid, topical steroids, anti-inflammatories, cyclosporin A, and tetracyclines [2]. Recent studies have also shed light on the influence of gut microbiota on DED, including its association with Sjögren’s syndrome [3].

PROBIAL® Vision Dry is a specially formulated complex probiotic blend designed to target bacterial overgrowth and gut dysbiosis, as well as inflammation and oxidative stress. It has been clinically demonstrated to improve both the symptoms and condition of DED [4].

In a clinical trial, PROBIAL® Vision Dry [4], when added to artificial tears treatment for 30 days in subjects with DED displaying signs of discomfort and/or dry eye, showed significant benefits compared to the placebo group (which received artificial tears only):

  • It improved the condition of dry eye disease, significantly strengthening the defense of the ocular surface systems.

  • It reduced the total number of aerobes and anaerobes bacteria isolated from conjunctival swabs.

These findings suggest that PROBIAL® Vision Dry can be an effective supplement to conventional treatments for DED, offering relief from symptoms and contributing to the overall health of the ocular surface.
